Ohrid, the pearl of the Balkans

Ohrid is a small town in the southwest of North Macedonia. But, what it lacks in size it makes up for in one of the most beautiful lakes in the Balkans. The country has about 260-300 sunny days per year! So, the chances are high that whenever you visit Ohrid, you’ll get to enjoy its views and walk its nature in good weather! Now, let’s explore why Ohrid is worth the visit!

The Ohrid lake

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest in the world, and it (together with the old city) is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. If you visit it, you’ll see why!

You can find various beaches along the lake’s long coast, from busy and trendy ones to more secluded, calm ones. You’ll also likely be stunned by the clarity of the water. At some spots, you’ll be able to see all the way down to the bottom of the lake! The mountains that surround lake Ohrid also make for a stunning landscape.
Fun fact: Craftsmen use shells and fish scales from fish that only live in this lake to create the famous, unique Ohrid pearl.

The old town

Ohrid is a modern town, with a well-kept old town on a hill. The old town is easy to reach, as it’s in the city center. You’ll certainly notice the characteristic architecture when you walk its narrow streets and slowly get transported into another world. As you walk uphill, you’ll get better views over the lake, the surrounding mountains, and the city. But keep on going up to discover more! Once you are at the top, you can walk on the remains of the Samoil fortress, visit the amphitheater, or go to the archeological site Plaoshnik.

Walk on water

On the edges of the old town, along its cliff, you can walk the narrow boardwalk and feel like you are walking on water! You’ll be able to admire the view, the calm and the clear water. There are restaurants and beaches that you can stop in along the way and take in the lake’s beauty. But, we advise you to first walk to the end of the boardwalk and then go up the stairs. You’ll end up in Kaneo, a beautiful spot with a great view and an old, well-reserved church!
